Karl Schwantes – Director, Designer, Gemmologist, Diamond Grader and Valuer, as well as ambassador for children’s charity Zig Zag – has more than just a sparkle in his eye when it comes to pitching for speaking engagements (and, actual engagements, come to that.)
In fact, through dedicated preparation and persistence, Karl bagged himself a live TV interview on the ‘Today Show’ in Perth.
Launching his dazzling new book ‘Rock her World’ next month, Karl is rapidly making his mark as the go to guy for dream engagement ring designs that truly capture the wow factor.
Here, he tells us all about his glistening KPI journey, on securing that diamond TV interview, and how he ensures his pitches receive an ‘I do’ every time….
“The first thing I did was look for an ideal partnership to help leverage my message to a greater audience, I wanted to start developing contacts now for my new book launch in February.
I contacted the company ‘Media Stable’ and pitched a range of different subjects I could speak about, specifically my expertise in the engagement ring market. Within a couple of weeks the Today Show in Perth asked if I would do an interview with them!
I prepared myself as much as possible in the short time I had, I wanted to ensure I came across as professional and helpful and not too “cheesy” – after all, on live television you only get one shot.
After it all I made sure I followed up with the producer, asking him for valuable feedback and pitching him a second story that they could use in the future. “
KARL’S TIP: When pitching to media – look to position yourself as the expert who is able to comment on interesting trends within your industry.
